Lou Pendergrast:
It’s a real honor to be able to chat with you today many thanks for sharing your precious time. What put you on the writing path and inspired you to write?

James Lee Burke:
I never wanted to be anything other than a writer. It wasn’t a conscious choice. My cousin Andre Dubus and I began writing when we were teenagers and learned a great deal from each other, I think.

Lou Pendergrast:
How did you find the road to writing your first novel, did you find it hard?

James Lee Burke:
It’s always hard. It requires a lifetime to get it right, if one ever does.

Lou Pendergrast:
You have a background in creative writing teaching alongside with Charles Willeford. What important advice would you give those new to writing?

James Lee Burke:

Charles and I were friends for twenty years. His advice would be the same as mine, I think: Never give up!

Lou Pendergrast:

I heard you in an interview mention the great craftsmanship of the author James M. Cain. He is also one of my favourite writers. Why is he good?

James Lee Burke:

Cain was a dedicated craftsman.

Lou Pendergrast:

I first learnd of Clete Purcel in the Glass Rainbow. David and Clete were ex-partners. Has he been featured in previous novels?┬áThe Bobbsey Twins what’s meaning of this?

James Lee Burke:

I’ve written many books and stories over the years. I’d better let the reader discover the characters.

Lou Pendergrast:
Which books would you recommend as essential reading?

James Lee Burke:

The great stories are in the Bible and Greek and Elizabethan theater.

Lou Pendergrast:

Thanks for your time.

James Lee Burke:
